Portland Winter Light Festival 2017
What an exciting Winter it’s been! I expected our first Winter in Portland to be full of rain and Netflix marathons, but instead, it’s been full of unexpected snow and fun events. Recently, Portland hosted their 2nd year of the Winter Light Festival. I’ve been to some incredible Winter festivals in the past, so my expectations were high. Let me tell you, the Portland Winter Light Festival did not disappoint, and it’s only in its second year!
Portland’s Winter Light Festival runs from Wednesday through Saturday and is sure to bring something a little different each night. This free festival is primarily located in and around OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) in the South East Waterfront. As a former teacher, it was very exciting to see this family friendly event spark some scientific inquiry for the many kids that attended. As an adult who thoroughly enjoys really cool festivals, it was even more exciting. PWFL did a wonderful job keeping your interest piqued whether you were 10 or 50. Offered among the evening were scientific talks such as ‘How to Make A Hologram’ and ‘Using Light As Part Of Art’, which was the cornerstone of the festival. They also had numerous performance artists walking around the fairgrounds, keeping you curious and laughing.
The festival had many incredible installations but the Radiance Dome was by far my favorite. On Saturday evening, they had the lights interact with music and it honestly made me stop in my tracks. I will admit that I am easily amused, but I knew it wasn’t just me when I looked around and everyone around me seemed to be entranced by the combination of colors and music. Some couples were even slow dancing as they turned their gaze upwards to enjoy each others company under a rainbow lit sky. You really need to see it to appreciate it. Check it out below:
How beautiful is that? It’s safe to say I spent a large portion of my time here. It was honestly hard to walk away!
Here were some of my other favorite installations on the fairgrounds-
Take a Ride on the Portland Spirit
The Portland Spirit does cruises up and down the Willimatte River year round, but during the Portland Winter Light Festival, the ship is uniquely lit up in rainbow twinkle lights. I didn’t get to take a ride on it but it was beautiful to watch slink along the river from the Tilikum crossing.
