About Ryan & Her Open Atlas

My name is Ryan and I’m so excited to start this travel blog! I’ve had a camera attached to my hand since I was 14. If you ask any of my friends they can assure you that I was the friend in the group who they could count on (or annoy them with, depends on who you ask) to take photos when we were all together. I’ve had a passion for travel photography¬†for the majority of my life. As I have gotten older, it has only intensified. So far, I have been to 10 countries & 17 states. I have lived in Ireland, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and most recently, Oregon.

My boyfriend Adam and I decided to pack up our lives in Burlington, Vermont and move across the country to Portland, Oregon. We took 4 weeks to travel the country and see parts of America that had been sitting on our bucket list for far too long. We’ve now been here for 6 months & ¬†are feeling more at home as each day passes.

The decision to start Her Open Atlas was on a whim. Since we moved to Portland, I have been trying to figure out who I am. Like most people in their 20’s, I have no idea what I’m doing with my life. I realized although I have no set career path, I’m already doing something with my life, and that something is travel photography.

When I finally joined the 21st century and got a smartphone, the first thing I did was join Instagram. (Actually, if I’m being honest, I joined Instagram before I got a smartphone. I would steal my boyfriend’s smartphone and post to Instagram from there, because I wanted to be able to share my photography that badly. He definitely picked on me for this.) Having an Instagram account was the first time I had a legitimate platform to share my photographs and travel photography. I quickly became obsessed. The only problem with Instagram was that I didn’t have the space to delve into details about the photos I was sharing. No one wants to read paragraph long captions on Instagram, they just don’t. So I found myself wanting something more, which brought me to starting this blog.

What I hope Her Open Atlas can become is a place to connect with others who love travel photography. What you will find here are personal stories from my life. I don’t have the luxurious lifestyle that you might find on other travel blogs, but I do have the same spirit! Although I can’t travel often, I am always exploring. Adam & I are always traveling around Oregon to find the next great hike, waterfall, or great cup of coffee. I hope you will join me on our adventures and share your own as well! Say hello underneath this post!
